What does a State Representative do in Indiana?

Across the nation, State Representatives play a crucial role in the functioning of local governments, serving as the voice of their constituents in the legislative process. Understanding the responsibilities and influence of one’s State Representative is vital for informed civic engagement and advocacy. Unfortunately, many people do not know who their Representative is, let alone what their Representative does. The current Representative in District 88, Chris Jeter, has done nothing to change that, so I am running against him to bring more awareness to local elections. For those who need it, I offer this introduction to explain what your Representative should be doing for you and this is what I promise to do for you if I am elected.

What does a State Representative in Indiana House District 88 do?

Legislation

The primary responsibility of a State Representative is to draft, propose, and vote on legislation. This includes creating laws that address various issues, from health care and education to infrastructure and public safety. Each representative has the opportunity to influence policy decisions that directly affect the lives of their constituents.

Representative Chris Jeter has used his capacity in this regard by proposing and supporting bills that harm Indiana, including a total abortion ban and permitless carry.

Constituent Services

Beyond crafting laws, State Representatives are also tasked with serving their constituents. This means addressing concerns, answering questions, and helping individuals navigate state services. Whether assisting with a complex state program or advocating for a local issue, these Representatives serve as a critical resource for community members.

Constituents have told me it takes multiple attempts to receive a response from Rep. Chris Jeter. As the Vice President of Operations for a large non-profit, approachability and responsiveness is critical to my success. I commit to bringing that same commitment and work ethic to the people of District 88.

Committee Work

State Representatives often serve on committees that focus on specific areas, such as finance, education, or public health. These committees review proposed legislation, conduct hearings, and make recommendations on bills. This work allows representatives to dive deep into specific issues, ensuring that laws are well-informed and beneficial.

This is why breaking the supermajority here in Indiana is imperative so that committees are diverse in thought and solutions.

Community Engagement

Effective State Representatives offer their constituents various options to engage, through town halls, community meetings, and local events. This engagement is essential for understanding the needs and priorities of the community. By listening to their constituents, Representatives can better advocate for issues that matter most to their districts.

I have not known of any town halls, community events, etc. that Jeter has held or participated in. I commit to making myself available to the community (and not just to those who may agree with my views at all times).

Budgetary Responsibilities

State Representatives play a significant role in the state budget process. They help determine how state funds are allocated, influencing everything from education funding to public safety initiatives. This financial oversight is crucial, as it directly impacts the quality of services available to residents.

As a past Executive Director of multiple non-profits, now the VP of a large multi-regional national organization, and the current Commission Chair of a Stage Agency, I am experienced and successful in this part of the job and will serve District 88 well in this regard.

Why is it important for constituents to know about their State Representative?

Understanding the role and responsibilities of a State Representative, especially here in Indiana House District 88, empowers citizens to engage in the political process. When constituents know what their Representatives do, they can more effectively communicate their needs and concerns, fostering a more responsive government.

Accountability

Elected officials are accountable to their constituents. By being informed about the actions and decisions of their Representatives, citizens can hold them accountable for their performance in office. This accountability is vital for a healthy democracy, as it encourages transparency and responsible governance.

Chris Jeter needs to be held accountable for his extremist views and actions. Indiana District 88 deserves better.

When constituents understand how to approach their representatives, they can advocate for specific concerns, whether it’s a community project, educational reforms, or public safety initiatives.
